We all grieve with the news of this loss. In my life I had one math teacher; he was John Foley of Holyoke High. I remained in contact throughout my professional career. John was a consummate professional. I moved on to a doctorate and college teaching at UMass. At my best in the classroom I heard echos of John's voice and approach to knowledge in my teaching. Most important was his approach to knowledge; he was never canned. Having taught a topic for 30 years, he managed to recreate his own spontaneous discovery of mathematical beauty to wrap around us and draw us in. Math is pure beauty and Truth with a capital T. Teaching like this is an artform I never could do as well as John. To his family I can say we grieve with you. We are all diminished with his passing. He is a part of thousands of his students. I loved John. Again, we grieve with you ~ George Collison, Acton MA, Massachusetts
