Rememberance from Jesse Elliot

John was a great teacher--one of the very best. I was one of his last students before he retired. He went above and beyond his duty to teach me advanced college math while I was his student in high school, even during the summer. He gave me some of his math books that he thought I would appreciate, which I did (and I still have them!). On his recommendation I applied to MIT and was accepted, and because of his him my math preparation was better than most other students upon entering MIT. John and I communicated while I was in college and in grad school at Berkeley, but unfortunately we lost touch with each other after I finished grad school. This is something that saddens me, especially on hearing about his passing. I'm now tenured faculty at the newest Cal State University campus, and I owe a great deal of my success to John, which is something that I really wish that he knew. I wish I could thank him now. John also very much had an influence on my style of teaching, since as a student I very much admired his. I even kept my calculus notes from high school--I still have them to this day!! I remember very vividly many of my experiences with John, mostly in the classroom. I remember where I sat in class and when and even how he taught certain topics. I remember once we had a conversation in class about the (first) Iraq war. I also remember a few times when he talked about his daughters. John's memory and his influence on my life will always be with me. ~ Jesse Elliott, Camarillo, California
